Future proofing Hittaut

Overview

Hittaut is a popular orienteering app in Sweden, created by the Swedish Orienteering Federation (Orienteringsförbundet). We were assigned to help with essential improvements.

In an elevator?

Since 2008 Hittaut has engaged hundreds of thousands of users and helped them explore their environment, find and register checkpoints. The app was struggling with an old technical platform and needed to be upgraded to be more future proof.

It was time to rebuild the popular Hittaut app using a more modern architecture and tech-stack, with minimal disturbance to the current user groups. We also took the opportunity to make sure the design was compliant to the new regulations regarding accessibility.

Challenge

The challenge was to develop a new version of Hittaut that enabled the current 100 000 users to easily upgrade with minimal friction. The app was available for both iOS and Android-users and the user interface needed to be more modern as well. Functionality such as off-line mode, since reliant internet connection is not always available when exploring the forest was high on the wish list of functionalities.

Solution

To save time and still publish the application to iOS and Android-users, we decided to build the application in React Native, enabling building to both platforms from the same source code. The design provided by Svenska Orienteringsförbundet needed an accessibility review and adjustments to make sure it was on par for the new accessibility law that soon will mandate better design for all services and products.

We optimized and added functionality to download local maps to the phone so that the app works both offline and online.

Result

A new version of the app released for both iOS and Android, fully integrated with the backend provided by Orienteringsförbundet. The app will be easier to update and maintain for the future.
