2025 is soon. Is your digital service ready for the new accessibility law?

The Accessibility Directive, set to become law in Sweden on June 28th, 2025, mandates that all commercial digital products and services be made accessible to as many users as possible. Failure to comply may lead to consequences, similar to the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018.

2025 is soon. Is your digital service ready for the new accessibility law?

Covered Services

The directive specific covers a number of different services but we still believe in making sure all services are accessible even if they are not covered in the new law. Below is a list of the services being covered specifically:

  • Electronic communication services for consumers
  • E-commerce services
  • Banking services
  • E-books
  • Services providing access to audiovisual media
  • Certain passenger transport services

Key Considerations

Here are some tips on what to check to make sure the service is compliant with the regulation:

Ensure Contrast and Readability

Good design prioritizes functionality over form. Verify sufficient contrast between background and text colors to ensure accessibility. Use tools like the WebAIM Contrast Checker for quick assessments.

Avoid Sole Reliance on Color

Ensure that information is not conveyed solely through color. Include text or icons to clarify the meaning of colors, benefiting users with visual impairments.

Support Operating System Accessibility Features

Do not obstruct the accessibility adjustments provided by modern operating systems. Always include descriptive alternative text for images to convey their intended information.

In Conclusion

Preparing for the Accessibility Directive depends on your current state of compliance. Conducting an accessibility review to identify necessary improvements and plan updates is advisable. Our Accessibility Review service can provide a comprehensive report to help you meet the needs of customers seeking a better user experience. Act promptly to ensure your product or service is accessible to all.
